Cylinders
Cylinders
2018

The first two weeks of every semester students are introduced to the pottery wheel, and learn to center the clay and ‘pull’ cylinders. Any student who wishes to continue on the wheel may do so, provided they also complete their other assigned projects (I arrange additional throwing instruction outside of class, and often bring in potters from the community for demonstrations). At the end of the semester they may substitute a comprehensive body of thrown work for the final assignment.

This student spent a substantial amount of time on the pottery wheel after the first couple of weeks. The design on her pots was carved into the surface, and the glaze was applied and then wiped-back. The background is the color of un-glazed clay. Cone 6 stoneware fired in oxidation (electric kiln).
